Egton and the Surrounding Area

Egton is an historic village located at the junction of five country lanes in the centre of the Esk Valley. In 1269, Henry III granted a Royal License to hold an Annual Fair and this continues today with the Annual Egton Show held in August each year.

The cottage next to the Ye Horseshoe Inn has a 1704 date stone, with Ye Horseshoe Inn being rebuilt 140 years ago. Spot the thatched cottage just down the road and you absorb centuries of village life.

The Grosmont Road leads to the starting point of the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway whilst the Goathland Road takes you to Goathland (the location for over ten years as 'Aidensfield' in the ITV 'Heartbeat' series). You can visit the 'Aidensfield Arms', 'Mostyns Garage', and 'Aidensfield Stores and Post Office'.

Roads leading to Rosedale and Stape branch off the Goathland Road - travel for miles in peace and tranquility.

A third road takes you deep into the North Yorkshire Moors via the villages of Glaisdale, Castleton, Lealholm and the Danby Moors Centre with the superb picture postcard scenery.

The fourth road leads you across the Moors to the historic market town of Guisborough with its twice weekly street market, whilst the fifth road takes you to the coastal villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay.

All have their own delights and history, Whitby continuing as a commercial and fishing port with its history of whaling, abbeys, convents and monasteries for 2000 years. Recent history includes Captain Cook and his life in Whitby and, of course, one remembers the Bram Stoker Dracula story which is based on the St. Mary's Church yard and Whitby port.

Within an hours drive of Ye Horseshoe Inn are - The Historic City of York, the coastal town of Scarborough, Flamingo Park, Eden Camp War Museum, Pickering etc. Your holiday at Ye Horseshoe Inn can be as active or relaxed as you choose.

Ye Horseshoe Inn is an ideal centre - an hour by car to York, Teesside and Scarborough. Between Malton and Pickering, you have the intriguing Eden Camp World War 2 Museum and the attraction of Flamingoland.
